The Day of the wedding
I remember meeting Suzanne and Simon at a wedding fair well over a year ago now and amongst the many people I had spoken to on the day, I will never forget hearing them mention that they planned to tie the knot at the Old Painted Hall in Greenwich. This venue has been on my radar for what seems like an age! After a bit of a chat and passing on a flyer, I waited with baited breath to hear back from them.
Christmas eve came around and an email popped up on my phone from Suzanne looking to arrange a consultation and from that email… well the rest is history.
The wedding day was finally here and I headed to the Mecure Hotel in Greenwich to capture Suzanne and the bridesmaids getting ready for the big day ahead. I had the pleasure of working alongside Nicola Peen again, Nicola is a fantastic makeup artist and a great laugh so check her out if your looking for makeup for your next special occasion. After my introductions and a coffee it was time to get the cameras out and get stuck in to shooting Suzanne’s stunning dress. The dress had intricate lace sleeves and a simple classic train, something I haven’t seen for a while on a wedding dress. Suzanne and Simon had booked Ben Walton for their videography and after looking at Ben’s great work online I was really keen to work with him at such an incredible venue.
As the girls took turns in the chair getting ready, the flowers arrived as well as room service. One of the bridesmaids had ordered some cheesy chips with dips; this was a classic moment worth capturing as they were presented on a tray underneath a silver cloche! :)
Bridal preparations went like clockwork and we managed to round things off by capturing dad’s reaction to Suzanne in her amazing dress. We had loads of time so finished with some lovely shots of just the girls outside the hotel before leaving for the wedding at the Old Painted Hall.
On arrival to the Royal Naval College I could already seem that guests had started to arrive and congregate on steps by the west colonnades. Simon and the ushers were greeting family and friends before heading off to go through the formalities with the registrar. The weather was perfect with a nice soft balanced light and some great cloud contrast, this made for some great shots especially with the grand buildings, domes of the chapel and hall as a backdrop.
I had already been up to the venue a few times before today to ensure everything went as planned. On my previous visit I had the pleasure of meeting Stephanie the wedding coordinator at the venue who had shown me around and allowed me to plan my photography. Stephanie was so helpful, so if you are planning to tie the knot at this amazing venue be sure to ask for her help.
The ceiling of the Painted hall is simply staggering and you get a great view of this when you walk up the stairs into the main hall which is where the wedding ceremony is conducted. Bob is the resident Toastmaster at the Naval College and started the formalities of the ceremony by introducing guests before Suzanne and the bridesmaids made their entrance.
As Suzanne made her way towards Simon with dad in arm, Simon was beaming as he got to see Suzanne for the first time, these guys were great together and after making their wedding vows and exchanging the rings it was time to seal the deal with a kiss!
Toast drinks led the way for the group photos and some breathtaking photos in the grounds. We finished off the photography with some naturally composed shots in front of the statue of King George before the guys headed back to their guests for more some more drinks and to the sound of the barbershop quartet.
The Wedding Breakfast was to be held in the Old Painted Hall and it didn’t take Bob long to usher guests back into the hall for dinner. I was to be totally spoilt with three courses of amazing food to look forward to as well as being seated with guests in the main hall! The service was everything you would expect from such a prestigious venue and the food certainly matched. It made a nice change to get to know some of the guests on the same table over dinner and I have to say it’s a meal I wont forget in a hurry.
After three scrummy courses it was time for Suzanne and Simon to cut the cake and then take their seats for the start of the speeches. This is a great part of the day for most, unless you are the groom of course when its time for the best man to deliver his speech. It is great to hear some of the history and the funny stories but from a photographer’s perspective I really love to see people enjoying themselves and capture the raw moments of laughter and maybe the odd tear.
As the speeches came to a close we were ushered across to the Queen Mary undercroft for the first dance and the evening reception. Suzanne and Simon had arranged for a live band to perform, which was a treat to photograph as the couple slow danced under the chandeliers and mood lighting. After the first dance it was time to get the party in full swing as they upped the tempo and played some classic floor fillers. An added bonus for the evening entertainment were the photo booth and 200 year old skittles alley which were both a huge hit with guests.
The guys really did have a perfect wedding day, everything went to plan and the polished finish of the staff and venue just brought it all together. I thoroughly enjoyed providing the wedding photography and getting to know these guys. To finish off a cracking day we headed out to take a few twilight shots, which I think these guys are going to love :)
Here are a handful of my favorite photos from this amazing wedding at the Old Painted Hall. Feel free to comment and share and get in touch if you’re looking for a wedding photographer to capture your wedding day.
