The Day of the wedding
Sussanna and Graham got engaged a few years ago and after seeing my photos from a friends wedding at Mount Ephraim got in touch to book me for their own big day. I’ve been looking forward to this wedding for some time now and knew after I’d heard all about the plans for the big day that it was going to be a great wedding to remember.
The wedding ceremony was going to be held at Leatherhead registry office and then it was a short trip down the road to Gildings Barn for the rest of the wedding reception, Graham had let me in to a secret that he would be hiring a Lamborghini for the weekend so the trip to the reception would be a great surprise for Sussanna. Both venues are full of character and Gildings barn offers a blank canvas for you to put together your own wedding décor from scratch.
I arrived at Ghyll Manor Cottage to start photographing the bridal preparations and after a short introduction to Sussanna and her sister Carina with a coffee it was time to get the cameras out and make a start. The cottage was very quaint and the girls enjoyed the very chilled out atmosphere with some background music as they had hair and makeup with a few glasses of Champagne. I like to photograph the day as unobtrusively as possible so as Sussanna and the bridesmaids had their hair and makeup done I found some nice angles to shoot from as the morning passed. Everything ran to time and in no time at all, the girls were soon putting their dresses on and making some final adjustments before we headed out for some shots in the stunning grounds of Gyhll Cottage.
On arrival to the registry office I could see a white Lamborghini parked outside so I knew Graham and the ushers were already here. Graham was enjoying catching up with guests before the ceremony began, I made good use of this time taking some photos in a documentary approach.
The Registrar made the announcement for the ceremony to begin and as the doors were opened all you could see were big smiles as the bridal party made their entrance, Sussanna was last to walk down the isle with her father as Graham struggled to hold back the tears.
Graham was smiling from ear to ear as he made eye contact with his future wife and you could sense the excitement as they held hands and exchanged a few words. The ceremony was perfect and rounded off with a few readings, as formalities drew to a close the guys sealed the deal with a kiss. The New Mr & Mrs Roberts signed the register and walked the isle one last time to lead guests outside to the lawn for confetti and group photos. I really like to include all the guests at this point of the day so my first group photo included everyone, after some short instructions I had everyone cheering and making plenty of noise as the guys held a kiss! The idea is that the longer the cheering from guests, the longer the kiss has to last, it’s a little bit of fun and always gets people in the mood for the next 10 minutes while we work our way through the shots. When we had finished we all headed to Gildings Barn for the evening reception.
On arrival to the Barn the guys enjoyed a drink or two with friends before I took the guys off for some romantic photos away from the rest of the crowd. My first shot included the use of some smoke grenades, which are a bit of a trademark photograph of mine, I asked two ushers to help and we absolutely nailed some fantastic photographs against the backdrop of the rustic barn against the blue skies. We had a great laugh while taking some photos and finished off with an ice cream, courtesy of the very nice man at the ice cream van that had been hired in for the wedding.
Guests were soon ushered inside the barn for the wedding breakfast and speeches and asked to be upstanding for the new Mr & Mrs Roberts as they made their entrance to a roar of cheers as they made their way to the top table. BBQ food lead the way to toast drinks and the speeches, first up was Graham who made a heartfelt speech about his life with Sussanna before handing over to the two best men who delivered a great speech as a duo which had us all in fits of laughter. As evening guests started to arrive they were soon mingling with the day guests at the bar ready to celebrate with the guys as they cut the wedding cake closely followed by the long awaited 1st dance.
The DJ gathered guests around the dance floor and announced the Bride and Groom to center stage. The guys shared a slow dance together before friends joined them on the dance floor to get the paty underway. As the night progressed, guests enjoyed the great music, photo booth and all the fantastic grounds this venue has to offer.
I had the best time looking after Graham and Sussanna, capturing this wedding will go down as one of my favorites from 2016, thank you Mr & Mrs Roberts. Here are some of my favorite photos from another great summer wedding at Gildings Barn. Please feel free to get in touch if you’re looking for a wedding photographer to capture your own wedding day.
